Last 224

Toe shape: Medium round

Fit: Regular with good heel grip

Known model: Chiltern

The 224 last has been around since 1953 and has a soft, round toe with a rather generous toe depth. Its width at the front is roughly between the 325 and 335, and it has a relatively balanced expression.

Good for: a classic Chukka fit that feels neither particularly narrow nor clunky.

Last 228

Toe shape: Medium round

Fit: Regular with generous toe depth

Known models: Snowdon

The 228 was developed for country walking shoes and boots. It is often used with more robust constructions and soles and provides plenty of room in the toe box.

Good for: boots, thicker socks and outdoor models.

Last 236

Toe shape: Short, blunt round

Fit: Regular but shallower at the front

Known model: Connaught

The 236 is one of Crockett & Jones' most traditionally English lasts. It has a shorter front and a slightly shallower toe box than many more modern lasts.

Good for: classic Oxford shoes and those who want a traditional British expression.

Last 314

Toe shape: High-walled round

Fit: Generous, higher instep

Well-known model: Boston

314 is a classic loafer last with higher walls, ample volume, and a higher instep. It is also available in multiple widths. The Boston is the model most strongly associated with it.

Good for: a higher instep and those who appreciate a roomier loafer.

Last 375

Toe shape: Same basic shape as 325

Fit: Regular in the front, tighter heel

Well-known model: Henley 3

375 was developed as a loafer variant of 325. It retains the classic toe shape of 325 but has a more sculpted heel for better grip.

Last 376

Toe shape: Same toe as 314

Fit: Generous in the front, tighter heel

Well-known model: Harvard 2

376 is practically the more modern loafer partner to 314. It was specifically created for unlined loafers and has a more sculpted heel cup that reduces heel slip.

Toe shape: High round

Fit: Slightly lower instep and narrower heel

Well-known model: Yale

391 builds upon Crockett & Jones' classic loafer shapes but has a shorter vamp, making it particularly suitable for those with a slightly lower instep. The heel is also more encompassing.

Toe shape: Refined and slightly shallower

Fit: Regular with a tighter heel

Well-known model: Nice

393 is a more elegant and relaxed loafer last with a softer, slightly shallower toe box and a more modern heel fit.

Last 325

One of the most important Crockett & Jones lasts. Medium round toe, increased toe depth and a fit that works on everything from Pembroke and Coniston to Cavendish.

Good for: brogues, Derby, boots, and customers who want a classic round shape with good space.

Last 335

Wider, rounder, and sturdier than the 325 with plenty of room in the front. Strongly associated with Chelsea 5.

Last 365

Crockett & Jones describes the 365 as their most generous last, with plenty of room both front and back. Best known through Islay.

Last 378

A modern, sturdy round last with a generous forefoot area but a more sculpted heel. It is particularly suitable for wider feet without automatically becoming loose in the heel.

Last 394

One of the newest lasts. Asymmetrical, generous in the front, and with a modern, more embracing heel. Crockett & Jones themselves describe it as one of their best fits in a long time.

Last 341

Medium round, classic and very balanced. A good reference last as it is used on many different types of models.

Last 348

More elongated with a square toe. It's a last where you can have a relatively large void in front of the toes without the shoe being too large – the heel-to-ball position is more important. Models like Hallam, Lowndes, and Westbourne are classic examples.

Last 360

A more elegant round last, close to 341 in fit but with a slightly more modern dress expression.

Last 377

Asymmetrical, round and slightly wider visually at the front but with a more modern, narrower back part.

Last 379

A modern interpretation of the classic 236. The same type of traditional round toe but with a completely modernized waist, cone and heel. Perfect for dressed Oxfords like Connaught 2.

Last 140

Classic round Hand Grade last with close heel fit. The fit is close to 341, 379 and 363.

Last 337

Soft square and more elongated. Classic Hand Grade last, used for Audley among others.

Last 363

Soft round toe, asymmetrical shape, narrower waist and tighter heel. Crockett & Jones describes it as one of their better fits.

Last 367

Soft square, with 337's forepart and a more sculpted heel inspired by 363. It therefore fits slightly tighter than 337/348.

Last 373

Sharp chisel toe, asymmetrical fit and narrow heel. The most visually dressed of these lasts.

Last 613

Almond toe, asymmetric and relatively elegant. Used for lace-ups, loafers, and boots. It appears slightly longer than several other women's lasts.

Last 617

More elongated soft-almond toe. It provides more visual and actual space in front of the toes and is one of the most used women's lasts.

Last 618

Medium round and shorter/softer at the front than both 613 and 617.

Frequently asked questions

A shoe last is the three-dimensional form around which a shoe is built. The last affects, among other things, the toe shape, width, volume over the forefoot, instep, waist, and how snugly the shoe fits around the heel. Therefore, two Crockett & Jones shoes of the same size can feel very different.

It depends on where on the foot you need the most room, but Last 365 is one of Crockett & Jones' most generous lasts in terms of overall volume. For example, 335, 378, and 394 also offer plenty of room in the forefoot, but with different heel and toe shapes.

For a higher instep, Last 314 is often a good alternative, as it has a relatively high volume over the instep and is used on classic loafer models such as the Boston. However, the fit is also affected by the width of the foot and the shape of the heel.

Many more modern lasts have a more sculpted rear part. 376, for example, has a tighter heel than 314, while 375 is based on 325 but with a more enveloping heel. Several Hand Grade lasts also have a close and sculpted heel grip.

The 348 is a more elongated last with a longer, square-shaped toe. It is therefore normal to have more room in front of the toes than in a shorter and rounder last. The most important thing is that the widest part of the foot is positioned correctly in the shoe and that the heel is stable.

Not automatically. In most cases, you can start with the same UK size and instead assess how the current last fits your foot shape. However, some lasts may feel narrower, roomier, or longer than others. If you already have a pair of Crockett & Jones that fits well, the model, last, and size are a good reference when choosing your next pair.
