Four Things to Consider Before Choosing Your Size

Finding the right size involves more than foot length alone. Use these four points as a first guide before comparing size charts and Crockett & Jones lasts.

Start with your usual UK size

If you already own well-fitting English-made shoes, your usual UK size is the best place to start. If you already wear Crockett & Jones, the model, last and size are particularly useful references.

Size and last are not the same thing

Two shoes in the same UK size can feel very different depending on the last. Toe shape, width, instep volume and heel fit all affect how the shoe fits.

Loafers and lace-up shoes fit differently

An Oxford or Derby can be adjusted through the lacing. A loafer instead relies on the fit itself to hold the foot securely, making heel grip and the correct instep volume especially important.

The right shoe should feel good from the start

Leather will adapt to the foot over time, but a shoe that is clearly too small or too large will not become the correct size through wear. A small amount of heel movement can, however, be normal in a brand-new pair.

The size charts are intended as a guide. Two shoes in the same size may fit differently depending on the last, fitting, style and shape of your foot.

How to Measure Your Feet at Home

Measure both feet while standing and wear the type of socks you intend to wear with the shoes.

Measure the length of your foot

Stand with your heel against a wall and measure from the heel to the tip of your longest toe.

Measure the width of your foot

Measure across the widest part of your foot while standing with your weight on it.

Use the larger foot as your reference

If your feet differ in size, use the measurements of the larger foot as your starting point.

Size & fit – in-depth

Crockett & Jones standard width for men is normally E. They also offer certain models in wider F and G widths.

This does not mean that an F or G shoe is simply the same shoe in a larger size. The width affects how much room the shoe has around the foot, while the length still corresponds to the specified size.

For women, the standard width is normally C, while some models are also offered in a wider D-width.

Often, the same UK size can work across several lasts, but the feel can differ significantly.

A generous last may provide more room over the forefoot and instep, while a more sculpted last may fit tighter around the heel, even though the size is identical.

If you already have a pair of Crockett & Jones that fit well, we therefore recommend that you compare both size and last, not just the size number.

A loafer should fit relatively snugly from the start, as it lacks laces to hold the foot in place.

The most important things are that:

the heel is held in place without significant slippage
the instep is held securely by the shoe
the forefoot is not pinched
the toes have enough room

A little heel movement can be normal in a brand-new loafer, but the shoe should not feel like it is coming off your foot when you walk.

With laces, you have a better opportunity to adjust the fit over the instep.

The shoe should feel stable around the heel and forefoot without pressure or pain. Your toes should not touch the front edge of the shoe.

On an Oxford, it is also important that the lacing works naturally for your instep and foot volume.

Unlined shoes can feel softer and more spacious as they lack a traditional leather lining.

Crockett & Jones' general fitting recommendation is that half a size smaller may sometimes be appropriate for unlined models. However, this should be seen as a starting point rather than a rule for all feet and models.

When trying on a new pair, we recommend doing so carefully indoors.

Please try them on a clean rug or soft surface, especially if the shoe has a leather sole. Loosen the laces thoroughly before putting the shoe on and please use a shoehorn for loafers to avoid damaging the heel area.

You do not need to walk for long to determine if the shoe feels clearly too small or large.

Your toes should not touch the front edge of the shoe, and there should not be a large gap at the heel.
